Technology Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
An evolution in the use of
shared computing resources that uses the internet as a wide-area network
is underway. Most readers are familiar with using the internet to
"surf-the-web" or send email. A Rich Internet Application
or RIA is a software application that combines the
robust functionality of desktop software with an Internet-based
architecture. These applications offer complex data manipulation and
fast response times with minimal end-user downloads. The server-side of the
application (databases, business rules, etc.) is hosted in a separate
location from the end-users of the application. The client-side of the
application (user-input) may access the application from virtually any
place that has an internet connection.
Business 2.0 Magazine (October 2004) named RIA’s “One of the Ten
Technologies to Watch in 2005”.
With an RIA, the internet is
used as a transport layer to send data back and forth between client and
server. The data resides on the server-side. All of the processing of
data, such as generating claims and statements, producing reports, etc.
is also done on the server-side. RIA costs are usually in the form of transaction fees
as opposed to the large up-front costs and long-term commitments
associated with conventional applications.
In terms of your operation, your users will still run the application from their desktops. The servers that,
in many cases, used to take up valuable office space are now located in a secure hosting facility.

Why should you
consider a RIA?
Accessible
from any internet connection
Able
to function over low-bandwidth (dial-up) lines
Automatically
retrieves software updates as soon as they are available...users always
have the latest version of the software
Combines the rich user-interface of a Windows application with
internet deployment
Enables “heads-down” data entry in a Windows application over the
internet
MedSuite operates as an Application Service
Provider (ASP) and offers its Practice Management System RIA on a
"subscription" basis.

A company that
"hosts" or offers an RIA product is often referred to as an
Application Service Provider or ASP. The ASP handles backups,
application software updates and upgrades, hardware maintenance,
operating system upgrades, and all of the other tasks that can make
having a system in your office a burden.
ASP's deploy, manage, and remotely host a
software application, via centrally located servers in a
rental, lease, or transactional arrangement over the internet.

Why an ASP?
High Availability/Unrestricted Access Environment
- Any Time... Any Place
o Available 24x7
o Available anywhere that an internet connection can be
found
Reduced Operational Overhead
o ASP performs system and database backups
o ASP performs overnight processing functions
o ASP performs server hardware maintenance and upgrades
o ASP performs server operating system maintenance and
upgrades
o ASP loads program updates
for all clients simultaneously - clients don't have to install updates, don't
get interrupted when a "patch" needs to be sent to them, and don't miss out on
"patches" that are sent to other clients who reported a particular problem
Lower costs
o Eliminates office-based servers, server hardware
maintenance and upgrades, operating system maintenance and upgrades,
server backups and paying someone to perform all of these functions
Enhanced Security
o ASP hosting center has 24x7 physical security eliminating
the threats of theft, fire, flood and vandalism
o Eliminates
power interruptions and heating and/or air-conditioning interruptions
Scalability
o Scales as your needs change at a fixed cost. There are no
“upgrade points” to the next level
Because MedSuite is an ASP, your data is maintained on MedSuite's servers which reside in
a Data Center that has 24x7 physical
security. The MedSuite hosting facility eliminates theft, fire and vandalism as risks that could
cause data loss. In addition, the MedSuite hosting facility has redundant power supplies and redundant HVAC
systems to eliminate power failures and heating or cooling failures as
potential causes for delays in accessing your
data. Of course, MedSuite also makes sure that your data is
properly backed-up. MedSuite maintains on-site database backups
that, should the need arise, provides for rapid retrieval and database
restoration. Iron Mountain, one of the largest data backup and
storage companies in the world, is used for off-site data storage and
retrieval. MedSuite's hosting center provides a
"high-availability" environment that allows you to access your data when
you want to and from where you want. It is far more likely that
a client will have fire, theft, flood, vandalism, power, or HVAC problems on
their end than MedSuite will on ours.

The Web is a universally accessible and secure platform to deploy
software, eliminating the need for you to invest in costly hardware,
networking equipment, software maintenance, or upgrades. For the
price of a connection to the Web, your practice can use the
infrastructure of the internet as your network backbone.
You and your staff can work or view critical
practice information, over the Web, from anywhere, at
anytime, with unlimited users, and with complete flexibility.
Practice administrators and physicians can see
complete and up-to-date practice information to make better decisions
from anywhere at anytime. Best of all, your practice will be doing
it better, faster, and cheaper.

With MedSuite, your data is much safer than it would
ever be on an unsecured desktop or server in your office. MedSuite employs all
of the leading-edge hosting security devices available, from secure HTTP
and
128-bit data encryption to sophisticated firewalls and anti-virus
software.
Your data is maintained on our servers in a state-of-the-art
data center with 24x7 security, fire suppression equipment, generator
backup for power failures and redundant heating and cooling systems.
Your data is also backed up offsite using the famed Iron Mountain backup facilities for a complete disaster recovery solution. MedSuite provides you with the power of a professionally managed and
continuously backed-up bunker-like data center that, on your own, would be difficult to cost-justify. Back to top

To use MedSuite, all you need is access to the Internet, Windows
2000
(or later) PC running at 500mhz or faster, with at least 20MB of free
disk space. MedSuite was built with a robust client front-end
and is not browser-based because we felt that the performance of
browser-based applications would not be sufficient to meet the
"heads-down" data entry requirements of a billing service or
large practice.
